Standards for Radiological Referral by Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives

The Standards for Radiological Referral by Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives builds on the established regulatory framework set out in the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives, alongside the Registered Nurse Programme and Registered Midwife Programme Standards, ensuring a consistent and outcome-based standards approach to practice and education.

The Standards ensure that registered nurses and registered midwives who undertake radiological referral are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and professional competence required to practise safely, effectively, and within their scope of practice.

The Practice Standards and Education Programme Standards apply to referrals for all radiological procedures including medical radiological procedures as referenced in S.I. No. 256 of 2018 and non-ionising procedures not referenced therein and provide a framework for registered nurses and registered midwives to practise and develop competence across this full range.
