Adaptation Guidance Documents (Nurses)

NMBI extends a warm welcome to all Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and we acknowledge their contribution to the Irish healthcare system. 

As a regulator, NMBI is responsible for promoting high standards of professional education and training, professional conduct among nurses and its mission is to protect the public through these functions. NMBI has developed a framework to support IENs who are completing an adaptation assessment programme in Ireland, prior to registration with NMBI.

A prerequisite to NMBI recognition of qualification and registration as indicated below may be that the applicant should successfully undertake a compensation measure of either:

  • I. a period of adaptation and assessment
  • II. an aptitude test

Competence Assessment Tool

The Competence Assessment Tool outlines the responsibilities of the Candidate Nurse and the Preceptor/Associate Preceptor during the period of supervised practice placement. 

It contains all the relevant forms which must be completed by the Candidate and Preceptor/Associate Preceptor during the period of supervised practice placement.
