Competence Assessment Tool: Midwives

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has as an important role in promoting high standards of professional education, training and conduct amongst midwives. 

To ensure these standards are upheld NMBI has developed an eligibility framework for those wishing to register as midwives. For overseas applicants, one of the outcomes of the registration process is that the applicants have to undergo a period of adaptation and assessment. 

Such an assessment is carried out to determine eligibility to register. The Competence Assessment Tool for Midwives is the key document used for these placements. It is intended to:

• Provide registered midwives in Irish health care facilities which are involved in the provision of an adaptation and assessment programme with guidance and information and the assessment framework
• Provide detailed information to applicants from overseas undergoing a period of adaptation and assessment
