Draft Midwifery Registration Programme Standards for Registered General Nurses
NMBI is holding a four week public consultation on the draft Registered Midwife Programme Standards for Registered General Nurses - Chapter 5, pages 71-78 only.
The recently revised Registered Midwife Programme Standards (2025) provide the framework for the development of the Registered Midwife Programme Standards for Registered General Nurses (RGN). The midwifery education standards outlined in Chapter 3 relate to the undergraduate 4-year degree route. The proposed post-RGN education route is outlined in Chapter 5.
The specific education adaptations required for this post registration route are:
- Clearly outlining how the standards for education differ to reflect the distinct learner profile, programme structure, and practice context.
- Explicit recognition that midwifery students undertaking the education programme are registered general nurses and remain employees while progressing through their midwifery education.

Please note that midwifery ‘standards for entry to the register’ are the same across both undergraduate and the Post RGN programmes, so no further work is required for this section.
Stakeholders are invited to review the draft standards and submit written feedback on chapter 5 (Midwifery Post RGN education standards) during the consultation period, which will run for four weeks from 14 May 2026 to 10 June 2026.
All submissions received within this timeframe will be carefully considered and will inform the finalisation of the Post RGN Midwifery Standards.
We welcome your views and thank you in advance for your engagement with this important work.
