The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) was established by the Nurses Act 1950 and continues under the provisions of the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011, as amended. NMBI is governed by a non-executive Board comprising of 23 members.

In addition, as a public body, NMBI must meet a number of other legislative requirements including around Data Protection, Freedom of Informaion, ethics and standards, procurement and official languages.

Furthermore, the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies sets out principles of corporate governance which State bodies are required to adopt.
