PDSA Quality Improvement Tool
The NMBI Pilot Professional Competence Scheme (PCS) is based on the PDSA (Plan – Do – Study – Act) quality improvement tool.

The PDSA approach is simple.
- Plan a learning activity
- Do it
- Study what happens by reflection to critically analyse learning and its impact on safe professional practice that will protect the public, and
- Act on it.
NMBI's role is to monitor the maintenance of professional competence. This is done by registered practitioners providing evidence of their continuing professional development and practice hours.
For the pilot scheme, all registered practitioners are required to complete:
- a minimum of 60 hours of CPD (or 20 hours per year) over a 3-year period and
- a minimum of 450 practice* hours over a 3-year period (or 150 hours per year).
(Practice* refers to any role in which the individual uses their professional skills and knowledge and is not restricted to the provision of direct clinical care.)
