Pilot Professional Competence Scheme

Examples of CPD

Laura is a staff nurse on a medical ward; she has 20 years nursing experience. Today one of Laura’s patients was prescribed a cardiac drug that she was not familiar with. Laura used this opportunity to learn about the medication prior to administering it. Laura used this work-based learning as an example of her CPD.

Reflection on your learning

Using the WHAT? reflective model, I considered:

  • What happened?

I encountered a new cardiac medication prescribed for a patient on our medical ward. As I was unfamiliar with it, I took the initiative to research the drug, its indications, side effects, contraindications, and method of administration. (Researching new drug - 20 minutes)

  • So what?

This learning opportunity allowed me to enhance my clinical knowledge and ensure safe practice. I discussed the drug with the prescribing doctor and the ward pharmacist to clarify any uncertainties. I then explained the medication to the patient, addressing their concerns and obtaining informed consent prior to administration. These actions reinforced my responsibilities around safe medication practice and communication. (Discussion with the prescribing doctor and pharmacist - 15 minutes)

  • Now what?

This experience reminded me of the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in practice. I feel more confident in dealing with unfamiliar medications and will continue to take a proactive approach in staying informed. It also emphasised the value of respectful patient interactions and seeking guidance when needed. (Reflection 25 minutes)
