Safeguarding Ireland, the national representative body which works for better policy and laws on safeguarding, is recommending that all adults, particularly those using healthcare services, make an Advance Healthcare Directive.
An Advance Healthcare Directive is a document that records a person’s decisions about their healthcare treatment if, in the future, they lack the capacity to make or communicate their decisions.
The directive aims to protect a person’s future healthcare decisions and provide a guide for healthcare professionals so that the person’s wishes and preferences on healthcare are known and can be adhered to.
Safeguarding Ireland is encouraging more adults to make an Advance Healthcare Directive, particularly if a person is accessing healthcare services more regularly in the future.
