Today is World Health Day, an annual day designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight important health issues.

Today is World Health Day, an annual day designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight important health issues.

This year is particularly poignant as it marks 75 years of the WHO working to improve public health across the world, with the theme of ‘Health For All’.

Nurses and midwives have played an essential role in ensuring that people are cared for with compassion, kindness, courtesy and empathy during this period, as well as before the foundation of WHO and they will continue to do so in the future.

Achieving Health For All inevitably comes with change.

In Ireland, we are seeing a number of changes in nursing and midwifery including changes in the workforce, demographic trends, evolving healthcare models through Sláintecare and technology to name just a few.

As the regulator for the professions, our aim is to support the 85,000 registered nurses and midwives on our Register through these changes. We want to be responsive, ensuring patient safety and public interest is served while the nursing and midwifery professions flourish.

On behalf of NMBI, I would like to thank all nurses and midwives working across the healthcare sector in acute and community-based settings for their contributions to providing critical care.
