NMBI is seeking expressions of interest from registered medical practitioners to act as independent Expert Witness (Psychiatrists) for Fitness to Practise inquiries.
Expert witnesses (psychiatrists) will be instructed on behalf of NMBI’s CEO to give their professional opinion to the Fitness to Practise Committee (FTPC) considering complaints made against registrants who have been referred to the FTPC on the ground of relevant medical disability as defined in the Nurses and Midwives Act (2011) (as amended).
Expert witnesses (psychiatrists) are asked to provide their opinion to the Fitness to Practise Committee on whether a registrant has and/or has had a mental disability (including addiction to alcohol or drugs) which may impair his or her ability to practise. As such, it is necessary for the expert witness (psychiatry) to have the requisite degree of expertise.
We are seeking individuals who:
- are currently registered in the specialist division (psychiatry) of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council.
- have experience in such areas as addiction psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, depression, anxiety and stress-related conditions.
- have a good understanding of the role and functions of the expert witness (psychiatry)
- have good verbal and written communication, analytical and reasoning skills, IT skills, and understanding of GDPR and data security.
The work of the expert witness typically involves a review of medical documentation relating to a complaint against a registrant to identify instances (if any) of relevant medical disability, preparing a report setting out their opinion, and possibly attending at an inquiry hearing.
Interested individuals must submit a cover letter and a copy of their CV to ftp@nmbi.ie.
If you would like any further information on what is involved, you can contact the FTP Inquiries Team at ftp@nmbi.ie.
Please note there is no guarantee of work arising from responding to this Expression of Interest.
