NMBI is committed to enabling Irish-registered nurses and midwives to play a leading role in improving our health service. Supporting nurses and midwives to make the right decisions for patient care and also achieve standards of professional practice is central to what we do.

To help nurses and midwives in their decision-making, we have developed standards and guidance for the professions. These publications are listed below.
 

Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives

The purpose of the Code is to guide you in your day-to-day practice and help you to understand your professional responsibilities in caring for patients in a safe, ethical and effective way.

Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework

This Framework provides guidance to all nurses and midwives in determining their roles and responsibilities in relation to the provision of safe, quality patient care. It encourages nurses and midwives to critically examine their scope of practice and expand it, where appropriate.

Midwives Practice Standards

Registered midwives practising in Ireland must comply with these Midwives Practice Standards, as well as any other developments that impact or inform the evidence-based practice of midwifery in Ireland.

Guidance to Nurses and Midwives on Medicines Management

The guidance outlines General Principles and Responsibilities, the cycle of Medication Management, safety in Medication Management and Medication Protocols

Prescriptive authority: practice standards and guidelines

This document addresses the professional responsibilities of nurses and midwives for their prescribing practices. These standards and guidelines for prescribing medicines should be viewed as the overarching mechanism with which a nurse/midwife is expected to practice.

National quality clinical learning environment

This document outlines the NMBI National Quality Clinical Learning Environment Audit Tool designed for use in all higher education institutions (HEIs) and associated healthcare providers (AHCPs) where pre-registration nursing and midwifery students are placed during their training. The HEIs and their AHCPs will determine the process for undertaking these audits. The audit tool should be used with the National Quality Clinical Learning Environment Audit Tool Professional Guidance Document.

Policy for Programme Approval and Monitoring Processes

This document presents an updated approach to the approval and monitoring of nursing and midwifery education and training programmes. It outlines the role of NMBI, education bodies and their Associated Health Care Providers (AHCPs) in our programme approval and monitoring processes. 

The processes outlined in this document relate to programme approval and monitoring of all pre first time registration programmes, post-registration programmes leading to registration and specialist nursing and midwifery education and training programmes. The processes are informed by our primary legislation, statutory instruments, our statement of strategy and our funding model.
