NMBI’s Statement of Strategy
On 3 April 2017, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, launched the new Statement of Strategy 2017-2019 of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), the statutory regulator of nurses and midwives.
Speaking at the launch at NMBI offices in Blackrock, Co Dublin, the Minister for Health, said: “Providing leadership through innovative and proactive professional regulation to registered nurses and midwives to help them deliver safe care is vital, and so I strongly welcome NMBI’s new strategy to facilitate this. Government, and I, are fully committed to patient safety through the provision of robust, independent, statutory regulation. NMBI plays an important role in protecting the public while ensuring the integrity of the professions through the promotion of high standards of education, training, practice and professional standards. I look forward to continuing to work with the body in this respect over the course of this new strategy."
President of the NMBI, Ms Essene Cassidy, said: “Our Statement of Strategy aims to support our core purpose, which is to support registrants and protect the public by establishing standards and requirements that guide nursing and midwifery practice in Ireland. The feedback we have received from stakeholders showed us that there is a need for us to better help them understand our role and the important work we undertake to safeguard patient safety. This new strategy reflects our drive now to strengthen our relationship with our registrants, to make our work more transparent, and to make sure we are equipped to meet the needs of our registrants, the public and other stakeholders going forward. We are thankful to the Minister for his presence here today and his continuing commitment, and that of his Department, to nursing and midwifery in Ireland.”
Ms Mary Griffin, NMBI CEO, added: “Statements of Strategy are always key milestones and vitally important blueprints to support organisational development. For the NMBI, there has never been a more critical one after a number of challenging years and we know that continuing to improve how we work in a resource-constrained environment will make strong demands of our organisation and our people. In this respect, we are improving the efficiency and effectiveness of our organisation by investing in relevant technology, supporting our staff in their education, redesigning our processes and procedures, proactively reviewing the structure of our organisation, expanding digital channels for self-service, and defining a sustainable funding model.”
The new NMBI Statement of Strategy 2017-2019 outlines three strategic priorities: strengthening the organisation’s reputation with registrants, the public and key stakeholders; building stakeholder understanding of how NMBI works and making it more consistent, efficient and effective to deal with; and ensuring NMBI is equipped to meet the needs of registrants, the public and other stakeholders and able to deliver on its new strategy.
The NMBI Statement of Strategy 2017-2019 was completed following a process that included developing a draft document based on NMBI’s statutory responsibilities and organisational objectives, and then a public consultation on this draft in October 2016. This consultation garnered feedback from registrants, former Board members, staff organisations, employers, patient advocate groups and other key stakeholders via an online survey, email responses and workshop meetings, an overview of which is outlined in NMBI’s Public Consultation Report. This feedback was then incorporated into the final Statement of Strategy 2017-2019.
