Review of existing nurse/midwife prescribing systems and processes
Nurse and midwife prescribing of medicines has been in place since 2007. There are now almost 1,000 Registered Nurse Prescribers (RNP) registered with NMBI and there are over 480 nurses and midwives on the Candidate register for the RNP Division. The implementation of nurse and midwife prescribing continues to be a key focus for NMBI to support the expanding role of nurses and midwives within the health care services in Ireland.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and the Office of Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD) within the HSE concluded a project to review the existing regulatory and implementation systems and processes in place to support nurse and midwife medicinal product prescribing.
The recommendations are far reaching. They include greater guidance and clarity about the CPA and Drugs and Therapeutic Committees’ role, improving clinical governance structures for RNPs and their employers. We encourage you to read the full report.
