About our Candidate Register
As well as maintaining the Register of Nurses and Midwives, NMBI also maintains a Candidate Register. The term 'candidate' refers to:
- Undergraduate nursing and midwifery students in Ireland.
- Postgraduate students who are completing programmes in Ireland that lead to registration with NMBI.
- Applicants who trained outside Ireland and are completing an adaptation and assessment placement.
Candidates must be on the Candidate Register for the duration of their training programme or adaptation and assessment placement. You need to apply to have your name placed on the Candidate Register. The process is different depending on which category you belong to.
Post Graduates
NMBI sends the application form to the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in Ireland. The HEIs will then distribute the forms to their students. To place your name on the Candidate Register, we will need a fully completed application form - signed, stamped and dated by your HEI. You will need to include your NMBI Personal Identification Number (PIN) on the application form.
All postgraduate candidates have an existing PIN as they are already on the Register of Nurses and Midwives in their primary division.
Adaptation and assessment candidates
If you have trained overseas, you may have secured what is termed an adaptation and assessment placement. You should visit the Adaptation and Assessment page for more details.
