Portfolio guidelines for candidates applying for registration as an advanced practitioner 

The following are guidelines for applicants for the registration in the Advanced Nurse Practitioners division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).  These are consistent with the criteria for registration which are set out in the Registering as an ANP/AMP page.

Portfolio submission

The applicant’s portfolio must demonstrate clear evidence that the person who is applying for registration either as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)/Advanced Midwife Practitioner (AMP) has the competences for Advanced Practice as per the Advanced Practice Standards and Requirements for the discipline in which they wish to register.

The core competences for Advanced Practice Nursing are as follows:

  • Professional Values and Conduct of the Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner 
  • Clinical-Decision Making
  • Knowledge and Cognitive Competencies
  • Communication and Interpersonal Competences
  • Management and Team Competences
  • Leadership and Professional Scholarship Competences 

Advanced Practice Midwifery is based on the 5 Principles listed below:

  • Respect for the Dignity of the Person
  • Professional Responsibility and Accountability
  • Quality of Practice.
  • Trust and Confidentiality
  • Collaboration with Others

S/he must meet the criteria for registration as an advanced practitioner and this must be evident in his/her portfolio.  The portfolio should be submitted as follows:

  • Typewritten
  • Arial Narrow font size 12
  • Double Line Spacing
  • Use clear headings and subheading-headings
  • Number each page

A complete submission will require the following documents to be submitted electronically via the following link:

  1. Portfolio (PDF format)             
  2. Completed self- assessment form (word format only)         
  3. Completed Advanced Practice Registration Form   
  4. Transcripts must be received directly from the Higher Education Institution to NMBI, which demonstrate achievement of clinical competences.

It should be noted that the applicant’s Portfolio may be shared with other experts /members of NMBI’s Advanced Practice Panel  in terms of reviewing the criteria for advanced practice.

On submission the portfolio will be allocated to a Professional Officer for a preliminary review. If the portfolio contains the relevant information to meet criteria for registration the Professional Officer will progress the applicant to the Review Panel.

The format of the review panel will focus on published competences and associated standards as follows:


  1. Apply ethically sounds solutions to complex issues (domain 1), 

  2. Utilise advanced knowledge, skills and abilities to engage in senior clinical decision-making (domain 2),

  3. Ability to contribute to professional body of knowledge (domain 3),

  4. Ability to negotiate and advocate for the person (domain 4),

  5. Ability to manage risk (domain 5)

  6. Ability to lead for good outcomes across the continuum of care (domain 6). 


  1. Ability to protect and promote the safety and autonomy of the woman and respect her experiences, choices, priorities, beliefs and values

  2. Ability to practice in line with legislation and professional guidance and are responsible and accountable within their scope of midwifery practice.

  3. Ability to use comprehensive professional knowledge and skills to provide safe, competent, kind, compassionate and respectful care.

  4. Ability to work in equal partnership with the woman and her family and establish a relationship of trust and confidentiality.

  5. Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with women, women’s families and with the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Applicants will be required to explain the following:

  1. Scope of professional and expert practice
  2. Governance for Quality {reporting relationships, clinical supervision}
  3. Clinical indemnity
  4. Caseload management
  5. Diagnostics
  6. Prescribing rights
  7. Referral pathways
  8. Values for Nurses and Midwives
  9. Admitting and discharging rights

The review panel then make a decision to:

  1. recommend the applicant to go forward to registration 
  1. defer recommending the applicant to the registration.

The registration department finalise the applicant’s registration as an Advanced Practitioner.

3. Professional Education

The applicant must hold a Master’s degree (or higher) in nursing or a Master’s degree which is relevant, or applicable, to the advanced field of practice.  The Master’s programme must be at Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (Quality & Qualifications Ireland), or equivalent.
Educational preparation must include at least three modular components pertaining to the relevant area of advanced practice, in addition to clinical practicum
The applicant must reference all post graduate education pertaining to relevant area of advanced practice (for example Higher Diploma; Post Graduate Diploma; Certificate).

4. Employment history 

Domains of Competence

Demonstrate your competencies and abilities to deliver each of the principal duties and responsibilities of the relevant Advanced Practice service. You will need to cross reference appropriate post graduate education and continuing professional development.

Provide an indepth paragraph on each of the six domains of competence in advanced practice: Professional Values and Conduct of the Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Clinical-Decision Making, Knowledge and Cognitive Competencies, Communication and Interpersonal Competences, Management and Team Competences, Leadership and Professional Scholarship Competences. It is imperative to integrate the specialist competencies established by the applicant and their clinical supervisor in this section also.

Record of supervised advanced practice (at least 500 hours)
a.    Please note that the applicant is not required to detail all 500 hours of supervised advanced practice. An explanatory summary paragraph outlining clinical supervision to date and cumulative total hours is sufficient
b.    A range of clinical supervision episodes (10 cases) from the 500 hours clinical supervision, which is representative of varying caseload presentations and age range using the following sample table format:

7. Evidence to support the establishment of clincial competencies with supervisor and demonstration of the achievement of practice specific competencies

Evidence of clinical supervision (formal and informal) with signed declaration from clinical supervisor

List continuous professional development to demonstrate the maintenance of competence relevant to advanced practice within the last two years only (stamped by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery)

Brief outline of teaching / conferences /research to date in last two years (This can be in table format) 

Details of established link with third level institution(s) and plans for on-going research and audit 

Demonstrate specific output measures (for example KPI’s) that show the impact of your advanced practice role in your speciality service within the last two years.

Membership of professional associations /organisations relevant to the advanced practice

Documents for submission

The portfolio should be submitted  with the following documents:

  • Application Form for Registration as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner/ Advanced Midwife Practitioner,
  • Arrange for Advanced Practice Transcript Form (which can be accessed by logging into the website through the My Account section) to come directly to NMBI from Higher Level Institution(s) for all post graduate education relevant to advanced practice role
  • NMBI Self-assessment tool for Advanced Practice Nursing and Advanced Practice Midwifery
