The Overseas Registration Application Request Form must be completed if you are an overseas applicant and want to register with NMBI.  

The Overseas Registration Application Request Form must be completed if you are an overseas applicant and want to register with NMBI.  

The form can only be accessed on the NMBI website. Before you complete this form, you should read the Trained outside Ireland page.


IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The fee which must accompany the Overseas Registration Application Request Form is non-refundable.

Both EU-EEA and non-EU-EEA applicants are required to meet the English language requirements before being added to the Register for Nurses and Midwives.

Non-EU-EEA Applicant

If you are a non-EU-EEA applicant you must ensure you meet NMBI’s English language competence requirement before you submit the Overseas Application Request Form and pay the assessment fee.

If you do not fill out page 3 of the Overseas Registration Application Request Form entitled 'English Language Competence' your application is incomplete. NMBI will contact you to notify you that you have one month to complete this section.

EU-EEA Applicant

If you are an EU-EEA Applicant you can provide language competence evidence after professional qualifications are recognised.

If you do not fill out page 3 of the Overseas Registration Application Request Form entitled 'English Language Competence' your application is incomplete. NMBI will contact you to notify you that you must complete this section before registration.
 
NMBI ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT PATHWAYS

Pathway 1: Trained in English in a NMBI Recognised Country

The pre-registration nursing or midwifery qualification which an applicant is relying on for registration was taught and examined in English in one of the NMBI recognised countries. NMBI will recognise the following countries as majority English speaking for the purpose of registering and practicing in Ireland:

  • Australia

  • Canada

  • New Zealand 

  • The United States of America

  • United Kingdom 

Evidence required 

A letter on headed paper or an email from the applicant’s training institution covering the following:

  • The location of the training institution

  • The name of the training programme attended

  • The dates of attendance

  • Confirmation that the course was taught and assessed in English

Pathway 2: Registered and practised in English

An applicant who wishes to rely on evidence that that they have registered and practised in English must be able to prove that they have 3 years post registration practice within the last five years in one of the recognised countries. Recognised countries are:  

  • Australia

  • Canada

  • New Zealand 

  • The United States of America

  • United Kingdom 

Evidence required
 
A letter on headed paper or an email from the applicant’s employer/s or Nursing Authority covering the following:

  • location of employment

  • the dates of employment

  • statement that the applicant was practising as a nurse or midwife primarily through English.

Pathway 3: English Language Tests

The applicant may submit a certificate of test results from either the International English Language Test System (IELTS) or Occupational English Test (OET).

Evidence required

NMBI accepts International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Test, IELTS Academic Test for UKVI, and the Occupational English Language Test (OET)  as evidence of English language competency.
